Depression: Prevention via Understanding



A temporary feeling of low and despair can happen to anyone. However, depression is emotional isolation characterized by profound sadness, fatigue, and a sense of worthlessness and guilt, lasting for a period of two weeks or longer. Major depression is one of the most common mental disorders and the second leading cause of disability. Globally, more than 350 million people, an estimated 4% of the world's population, suffer from depression. In sustenance societies, the immense role of community, interaction, and responsibilities generate shared identification, making depression less likely.

The loss of interest or pleasure in a depressed mood also includes at least four other symptoms, such as problems with sleep, eating, energy, concentration, and self-image. Depression does not affect people when their sphere of influence is increasing, but when their sense of confidence is challenged, depressed people are unable to mount a response. The energy weak mental state is characterized by a lack of confidence, trust, and will. Emotional rigidity, negativity, increased sensitivity and pronounced inward focus isolate depressed people. Because depression inhibits the capacity for interaction, it can even be considered a psychological death. The degradation of volition makes it impossible to be emotionally moved by life events. 

The perception of time slows; a slow mindset leads to slowness in action and cognitive functions, including decisions, actions, and even movements. Depressed patients are also preoccupied with past events, intuition about the future evaporates.  Delusions about past mistakes fill a guilt-ridden mind and lead to painful detachment from family and friends. People with a history of depression show a higher propensity for guilt. Guilt-ridden and insecure people may overcompensate by showing excess generosity. Uncertainty also increases the sensitivity for shame, which is the perceived loss of mental power. High expectations, such as in high-stress environments, abusive relationships can lead to depression. 

How to overcome depression?

The best depression treatment is prevention. Connect with someone you love, Seek out your family or friends. Some people do this through a higher power. Find a connection to another, nature. Plant a garden, adopt a pet. Engage in meaningful physical activity or sports.

  1. I came from a finance background and worked in MNC for so many years working on computer for something I just did for money but not for my own interest. Currently I am a homemaker, taking care of my family, 1 year old kid, run after him, growing him to be a good human being and once he sleep I turned out to be a blogger who is putting her honest thoughts and experience in public so that everyone can get help out of it. My blogs are nothing just a representation of what I am and what I feel within myself.
