A paddle steamer |
Plastic waste has become dire pollution that accumulates in every environment of the Earth and adversely affects wildlife, wildlife habitat, and humans. The Great Pacific garbage patch is a gyre of marine debris particles in the north central Pacific Ocean. The area contains plastic, chemical sludge, and other debris that have been trapped by the currents of the North Pacific Gyre. It consists primarily of an increase in suspended, often microscopic, particles in the upper water column. The patch covers 1.6 million square kilometers and comprises 1.8 trillion pieces, about 92% of the mass comes from objects bigger than 0.5 centimeters. A similar patch of floating plastic debris in the Atlantic Ocean is called the North Atlantic garbage patch.
Research indicates that the patch is rapidly accumulating. Can the garbage be gathered safely and cost-effectively? In the post below I outline a two-step process that will clean up the trash.
Step 1. A paddle steamer is a steamship or riverboat that drive the paddle wheels to propel the craft through the water. In our case, a modern, high-efficiency engine propels the boat slowly through the water, while its paddle wheels turn in reverse to catch the plastique pieces. The paddle is shaped in such a way that it filters out plastique with a specific size and shape.

Step 2. The collected plastic can be safely baled by a baler on the ship and stored for transportation to a recycling facility. A baler compresses material into bales that are easy to handle and store. Industrial balers that are used in recycling facilities prepare plastic for transport.

The two-step process, described above is an innovative approach to cleaning up the garbage patch on the world's oceans. The collection of plastic can be fully automated as a mobile factory in the middle of the ocean. Servicing the operation would require regular transportation of the collected trash for recycling.
