The hypothesis behind 'The Science of Consciousness,' the book

I often get requests to give a nutshell summary of my hypothesis. The outline evolves over time toward a more straightforward, elegant language. Here it is today.

'The Science of consciousness' is a cohesive hypothesis that incorporates consciousness as part of the physical universe. There is a structural unity between elementary particles, the mind, and the cosmos; such deep, essential connection allows us to recognize the laws of nature. It also permits the recognition that those same laws govern intelligent behavior and social movement. The formation of cosmos did not end with the birth of the electron and other elementary particles, it is an ongoing evolution toward intellect, the mind.

Humanity can benefit from this cosmic process via technological advancement. Technology's dependence has changed from the coal and steam engine to oil, computer technology, and artificial intelligence.

In the age of intellect, we can acquire as much of the limitless cosmic energy and other resources that are permitted by our technological progress. A fast progressing society is highly dependent on mental ingenuity. Increasingly, only human genius will be in short supply. This recognition should inspire us to be open to other religions, cultures, and to be generous toward the less fortunate because of their unique, individual viewpoint and intellect.

Can deep brain stimulation be used for the treatment of drug addiction?

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a modulation of brain activity by implanted electrodes, used in Parkinson's disease, depression, tremor, or dystonia. In drug addictions, a reduction in the functioning of the prefrontal cortex might diminish impulse control, which gives a possibility to use the technique. In the past 15 years, animal DBS studies investigated its potential for addiction to various abused drugs, most of them have found decreased drug-seeking behavior. The same treatment in people has more challenging to implement. Especially in Europe and the U.S., the high cost of devices ($100,000) and the difficulties in recruiting patients have delayed clinical experimentation.

In the DBS treatment of opioid addiction, five of eight patients in China have stayed off heroin for at least two years, and a patient who received a device six months ago has been off drugs for the duration. To date, six of the eight clinical trials have been registered in China for this type of treatment.

In early studies, DBS resulted in a significant decrease in the severity of cocaine dependence in objective and subjective measurements. It also reduced the craving for alcohol. It improved patients’ depressive and anxious symptoms, as well as increased the subjectively perceived quality of life. In life changes, significant improvement of memory and IQ, as well as experience in depression and anxiety, were found.

Increase your productivity by taking a break

Biological, physiological needs, circadian rhythms, and even environmental circumstances influence performance. The superior energy distribution and turnover in the brain ensure the fluid regulation of the mind. Being tired and hungry causes glitches in energy supply, which damages cognitive flexibility, causing a decline in performance. The hectic pace of our day harms the quality of our life. Nervousness and anxiety lead to impatience, sloppiness, and superficiality. Stress erodes determination, which causes negative attitudes to become preferred behavior. A feeling of pressure should be the signal for the need to slow down.

Taking a break is easy to understand, because rest refreshes the mind, increases resilience and fuels determination. As discussed earlier, optimal sleep improves intelligence, bodily function, and spiritual stability. Creating a distance from the grind of every day by spending time within a supporting circle of friends or family can spur a fresh perspective and a new momentum in our thinking. Taking time to help friends, family members, or strangers is a change of mental scenery, which improves goodwill.

A concert, gallery viewing, or walking in nature or a park, elevates the soul; reading meaningful thoughts from a book can turn into a mental vacation. Even domestic activities, such as cooking, cleaning, or organizing, can create an uplifting change of scenery. Humor is an instant confidence booster.
Rest allows you to take stock by evaluating whether you are on the right track.

START OVER  Sometimes we can overcome stress and confusion and by pulling back with respect for the difficulty of the problem. Starting over with a fresh perspective and a novel approach is a slowing down that can lead to huge breakthroughs if only you can trust in the possibility of achievement. The ability to progress in slow, careful steps can make the difference between finding a solution or failure. Starting over might be the most faithful adherence to your goal.

Doing your best creates confidence.

Can a static universe satisfy Mach’s principle?

Mach's principle, that every mass in the universe influences every other, is an important consideration in physics that inspired Einstein to formulate General relativity. Although his final theory failed to follow it, Mach's ideas still inspire thinking. Nevertheless, Einstein's equations can be written in a form that has no time dependence. The resulting static universe is in clear contradiction with the observed reality. Page and Wootters recognized that changes of entangled systems can leave the global state of the cosmos unchanged.

Page and Wootters’ mechanism (PaW) predicts that quantum entanglement leaves the state of the universe static. We satisfy the principle by dividing the cosmos into compact and non-compact dimensions, by insulating the wave function from space and gravity. In this scenario, entangled sister particles satisfy conservation principles independently of distance but modify the local volume. Either pressure or vacuum generates an orthogonal transformation (interaction) to restore symmetry. Over time space contracts or expands to develop curvature. The universe degenerates into poles, two-dimensional black holes, and four-dimensional white holes, connected by a smooth topology. Dimensional anisotropy turns gravity into a bipolar force. The verifiable and elegant hypothesis supersedes general relativity by satisfying Mach’s principle; it also offers a possible path for unification with quantum mechanics.

The potential of using light therapy in the treatment of Alzheimer disease and dementia

Bright light therapy is used as a treatment for seasonal affective disorder (SAD). But it has also been used to treat other conditions such as bipolar depression, chronic depressive disorder, circadian phase sleep disorders, postpartum depression, and insomnia. Because sleep disturbances are common in patients with dementia and Alzheimer disease, the treatment may be useful for these conditions too.

Bright light therapy administration in the morning that treats sleep disorder in patients with dementia might entrain the circadian rhythm to restore a healthy sleep-wake cycle. It also might reduce aggressive behavior in patients with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia. The bright light triggers gamma oscillations in the visual cortex, which produces some intercellular events (such as gene expression) and improve synaptic connections. For example, LED lights flickering at specific frequencies and found that it significantly reduced beta-amyloid plaques in mouse brain. The treatment activated immune cells that destroyed these plaques.

Emotional intelligence predicts endurance, individual success and social cooperation

Because genuine people learn and create meaning from every interaction, they can handle criticism and challenges. Just as energy flows from warmer, to colder matter, more stable (less irritable) people tend to gather wisdom and understanding from every experience. It leads to the ability to engage, relate to others and situations via trust, and to find integrated solutions. Thus, the lack of impulsivity, emotional intelligence, goes a long way toward individual success and social cooperation. Having no regrets is an open mind that dares to attract help, and the humbleness to accept it. These flexible people adapt to opportunities with ease, even in the boardroom or on the trading floor (traders with a positive attitude and trust tend to make more money). Emotional intelligence can predict the finish time of long-distance runners

In endurance tests, people who can regulate their emotions keep pushing when the going is difficult. For example, long-distance runners can press on and lead to a good race. recent paper from three psychologists in Italy, led by Enrico Rubaltelli of the University of Padova, explored the links between emotional intelligence and half-marathon performance. The research found that aside from technique and preparation, people with higher marks on this quality ran faster races.

How to introduce order in your life

A regular daily feeding and walking schedule can effectively rehabilitate abused and neglected dogs. Creating an order powerfully eliminates stress for people also. Children thrive on the predictability and organization in their lives. Consolidating our daily, weekly schedule into a regular, predictable routine provides a reassuring balance. Breaking up big tasks into manageable steps and framing work with a deadline increases the likelihood of completion. Organizing tasks based on importance and urgency allows you to manage your workflow effectively.

Because the mind projects expectations for the future by averaging the events and experiences, even without a detailed plan, it constructs action steps toward clear objectives. Becoming free of regrets, pains and mental chaos permits an optimal orientation to crystalize. Know your weaknesses. Some people have difficulty starting expansive projects; others have trouble streamlining or finishing them. Rain-in your shortcomings by maintaining a strict discipline throughout the project.

FINANCES  You are the center of your universe. Honor your unique position with your financial choices. Increase your access to time by getting services, gadgets that save time spent on mindless tasks. Empty entertainments are like empty calories; they leave you spent and scattered. Focusing instead on experiences of beauty, learning, happiness, and joy improves your mental strength, patience, and persistence.

Our financial security greatly influences our attitude toward money. As starvation creates an insatiable appetite for food, a constant lack generates emotional mass, a hunger for control and difficulty to part with clutter. Penny-pinching also reinforces a mindset of scarcity. Searching for coupons, deals and garage sales generates aimlessness and lack of focus.

Confident about their welfare, the wealthy have a greater appreciation for the quality of life, by choosing vacations and entertainments. Their relaxed attitude encourages choices toward well-being and wealth, whereas the poor are locked in an endless struggle for survival.

Paying attention to small details allows big ideas to succeed.

Stay ahead of the curve by preparing for success

Kings, emperors, princes, and noblemen often credited their entitlements and privileged positions to God. Social hierarchy was rigid, unquestionable and impossible to break through from below. When the industrial revolution shook the social order, it created an opening for people outside the aristocracy. The respect of finance replaced the social hierarchy based on the title. Political and social positions came to depend on connections or money. Modern economic systems are highly dependent on the advance of knowledge. The recognition of talent, innovation, ingenuity, and hard work as the real source of progress shift respect toward intellectual capital.

The speed of technological progress and social change heightens the importance of individual talent, education (learning) and mental prowess. Intelligence and skills might be as diverse as the colors of the Itten color wheel. The Itten color wheel is a two-dimensional color wheel depicting the variables of hue (red, green, blue, etc.) and brightness (gradations of light and dark). Increasing respect for individual talent is reflected in celebrity culture, whether in film, politics, arts, sports, and science. Conducting job interviews over the internet permits companies to choose candidates independent of sex or ethnicity. The notable discovery of our generation is that intelligence can be actively improved. Thus, our responsibility is to be up-to-date in our fields, to discover and nurture our talents. College degree is often a requirement for a job, but it is not required for creating a successful life. Nor does a college degree end your need for learning; careers require a continuous acquisition of new skills. In our changing world, we must adopt a growth mindset to stay current.

How to prepare for change

Mountain climbing is a sport that requires careful forethought, appropriate gear as well as physical and intellectual preparation. Acclimatization prevents insomnia and ensures motivation and fitness. At high altitude, where weather can shift in an instant, waiting for the best conditions can make the difference between life and death. Mistakes can be deadly.

THE TEMPORAL FIELD Deviations of the temporal field, which forms our psychology, can be taxing. The diagnosis of a terminal disease, loss of a loved one may take a long time to fully accept. Adjusting to personal and career changes requires saving money, intellectual or physical training, planning, and forethought. Even winning the lottery or getting a promotion takes a psychological adjustment. Do not let the sense of inadequacy derail your plans.

Summiting Mount Everest is a significant challenge. Likewise, life’s significant changes require many months or even years of intellectual development. In sports, music and the arts, years of preparation produces a professional performance. That preparation effectively reformulates the mind. Performing at a high level in any field requires confidence, which takes time to build.

ACCLIMATIZATION Acclimatizing to your field of interest is a time-consuming but essential step. Without proper preparation, insufficient confidence will demoralize and collapse your ambitions. Start big projects slowly and increase your confidence by accomplishing simple tasks. Experiencing failure uncovers the areas that need more work. Like ascending a high mountain, gradual advancement allows you to adopt the mindset and habits of your field. For example, writers must get into the habit of writing regularly, preferably every day. Artists must set aside time to sketch daily.

Schools curriculums develop professional and personal confidence gradually. When graduates receive their diploma, students suddenly become doctors, engineers or teachers. Faith in their expertise is supplied on a piece of paper with nice lettering and the signatures of influential people. The many small victories of achievement over years of hard work gradually transformed the temporal field, which allows the confidence of an expert at the time of graduation.

The importance of goals in achievement

A goal act as a little compass that operates in our lives even without conscious intentions.  Accomplishments toward them produce positive feelings because it makes goals seem immediate and approachable. When you solve a puzzle, get a joke or win the game, the mind takes ‘hold’ of the object. On the other hand, negative sentiments create a sense of postponement, a never-ending time trap.

A goal is like a glistening faraway mountain, promising and approachable; but do not let it mislead you. Big goals, like big mountains, are difficult to conquer. Climbers, who wish to the ascent of Mount Everest, must develop stamina, determination, and discipline. Likewise, achieving a goal is as much a mindset as the visible trappings of success. Working for a purpose reformulates the mind, which then manifests those goals. Because significant changes require substantial intellectual upgrading, expect to work at it for a long, long time. Small, but persistent changes in thinking and behavior are the most powerful ways to move the mind out of its periodicity and achieve transformation.

COMPOUND INTEREST Dreams are the products of youthful optimism, paper tigers of a mirage, crowded with fancy details of the imagination. Goals solidify ideas, turning them into the realities of the future. Have discipline in visualizing the essence of your aim; this allows you to recognize the necessary steps to get there. Goals are like a compass, which focus energies toward the future. Goal orientation supplies appropriate attitude, confidence and keeps spiritual independence against disturbances. Focusing on future regulates motivation, thoughts, and behavior at all times, even in sleep. Because food, water, muscle strength, memory capacity and ability to focus are not instantly expandable, biological systems always have to contend with limited energy supply, and the necessity to budget. Our life lasts until the next breath, next rain or the next meal. Cacti or camels prepare for the future by storing water in the desert, many mammals grow fat and thick fur before winter, and humans save emergency funds against misfortunes.

The fundamental structure of the universe

Figure 1. The proposed view of ‘space-time.’ The micro-dimensions (horizontal lines) are isolated by an information blocking horizon, which devolves particle frequencies into discrete energy standing waves. Entanglement is a division of the wave function, leading to interaction with the spatial field. Decoherence or interaction is an energy–information exchange between the micro and macro-dimensions. Thus, the field, which forms the smooth topology of space, and the discrete particle wave function, evolve parallel.

Models help to answer the most fundamental questions of the physical world.  The incompatibility of string theory, quantum mechanics and general relativity suggests that forming a model that includes these fundamental physical theories of physics should be a priority. In string theory, an information blocking horizon separates particles into micro-dimensional standing waves (fig.1) from macro-dimensional space. Quantum mechanics requires that the particle also changes during the interaction, an energy/information exchange between micro and macro-dimensions. Thus, interaction modifies spatial volume (fig.2) and reverses the sign (-) in the Lorentzian time metric. Although these modifications are too small to be observed locally, every interaction modifies both the volume of macro-dimensions and the particle information value. Information accumulation of the horizon forms a discrete time progression (fig.1, horizontal lines), the Dirac delta function. The wave function insulation from space, time and gravity permits quantum phenomena, such as entanglement and the double slit experiment. It also gives rise to cosmic self-regulation: micro-dimensions maintain a closed minimal-surface with constant extrinsic curvature (fig.1), whereas, by generating antipodal complex conjugates (fig.2), entanglement satisfies the principle of static time. An interaction between the wave-function and the field curvature ensures their parallel evolution (fig.1).

A novel and economical plan to clean the oceans of plastic trash

Paddle-steamer
A paddle steamer

Plastic waste has become dire pollution that accumulates in every environment of the Earth and adversely affects wildlife, wildlife habitat, and humans. The Great Pacific garbage patch is a gyre of marine debris particles in the north central Pacific Ocean. The area contains plastic, chemical sludge, and other debris that have been trapped by the currents of the North Pacific Gyre. It consists primarily of an increase in suspended, often microscopic, particles in the upper water column. The patch covers 1.6 million square kilometers and comprises 1.8 trillion pieces, about 92% of the mass comes from objects bigger than 0.5 centimeters. A similar patch of floating plastic debris in the Atlantic Ocean is called the North Atlantic garbage patch.

Research indicates that the patch is rapidly accumulating. Can the garbage be gathered safely and cost-effectively? In the post below I outline a two-step process that will clean up the trash.

Step 1. A paddle steamer is a steamship or riverboat that drive the paddle wheels to propel the craft through the water. In our case, a modern, high-efficiency engine propels the boat slowly through the water, while its paddle wheels turn in reverse to catch the plastique pieces. The paddle is shaped in such a way that it filters out plastique with a specific size and shape.

The paddle wheel picks up garbage as it turns and drops of collected pieces onto the boat's moving platform. Image attribution: Malcolm Boura

Step 2. The collected plastic can be safely baled by a baler on the ship and stored for transportation to a recycling facility. A baler compresses material into bales that are easy to handle and store. Industrial balers that are used in recycling facilities prepare plastic for transport.

Image result for plastic bales for transportation

The two-step process, described above is an innovative approach to cleaning up the garbage patch on the world's oceans. The collection of plastic can be fully automated as a mobile factory in the middle of the ocean. Servicing the operation would require regular transportation of the collected trash for recycling.

Please contact me at this link if you would like to help with moral support, financial assistance or technical know-how in turning this idea into a real-world solution for the world! Please share the post with others. By acting together, we can solve the problems humanity faces.
